I can’t believe I’m writing this sentence, but… this is my final Photo of the Week from Central America… at least for now! Fifteen weeks have gone by since I first touched down in Nicaragua, and this final one had me waving goodbye to the region from the Honduran island of Roatán. I first vacationed in Roatán five years ago when I spent a summer living and working in the Cayman Islands, and so it’s only appropriate that I relive the whole shebang at one — I just arrived back on Grand Cayman. What a blast from the past!

This trip to Roatán was quite different from the last. Five years ago, my ex-boyfriend and I were budgeting every lempira, couchsurfed with a local dive instructor and were fell in love with the one (dirt) road town of West End. Five years later, and that dirt road’s been paved, I had fellow blogger and Roatán expert as my tour guide, and I was able to splurge on many a lovely meal. As usual, can’t wait to share more.

This week on the blog I have one last post from Nicaragua coming up before we dive into El Salvador, as well as a travel book review (it’s been a while!). I can’t wait to hear what you guys think. But for now, onto Photo of the Week…

Photo E is my favorite for the swim-through. I’d love to dive between those walls! But the juice in photo A looks delicious!

One of the things I will miss most about Central America is cheap fresh juices every day!

Just got back from a week on Roatan, made 2 dives a day, 5 days with Coconut Tree Divers in West End. We stayed in a house with 2 other couples just down the beach (Coral Vista) and it was relaxing, fun, easy diving – could walk to all the restaurants and around town. Took an “informal” island tour the last day to get a feel for everything. Stopped by the Iguana Farm (got some great pics!) and learned the island is 36 miles long by 4 miles wide. Headed back to Utila in August (Women Divers Hall of Fame trip – should be LOTS of fun!)

Bonnie, I dove with West End Divers when I first went to Roatan five years ago! This time I was diving on the side of the island at Barefoot. I wonder if we just missed each other!

  • I love the yellow and the way you framed Photo B, but I think Photo E is the winner. The seahorse and that dive between the rocks looks fascinating! I really need to schedule my first scuba dive soon… 🙂

I love the bright colour of B but I have to go with E because of the seahorse. They are my favourite sea creatures and the one that I haven’t yet seen in the wild

I like Photo D best. I like the colors, and with a diver and fish, there are some interactions that are difficult to successfully capture. In truth, I like all of the photos, but that was my favorite.

It certainly did! But mostly I just felt grateful that five years on and I’m still on the road and making my career dreams happen in ways I would have only dared to imagine back then 🙂 And I doubt I’d be doing that if I was still in that same relationship.

  • OMG you saw a seahorse!! For real!!!! That is one of my big “bucket list” items. Every time I go snorkeling or diving I am like eagle-eyeing all of the sea grass looking for one of those li’l guys!!
