I’m literally typing this from the airport, where I’m dressed head to toe in a new travel brand I’m obsessed with called Encircled.

I used to joke to my friends that there was a reason I wasn’t a fashion blogger and it started with swea- and ended with -tpants. I rarely discuss style on Meihoukai in Wanderland, and this is in fact the first clothing company I’ve ever extensively featured. It was worth the wait.

Well, I’m still not a fashion blogger, but I am a girl that loves to wander, geeks out over sustainability, and has finally nailed the perfect outfits to wear for those long travel days when you’re headed to the airport, the train station, or the driver’s seat.

What To Wear On Travel Days

What To Wear On Travel Days

Encircled’s mission is creating clothes that allow you to travel light without sacrificing style — or sustainability. More on that in the second half of this post. For now, here’s what I’ve been wearing lately…

1. …for quick domestic travel days

Leggings and a long top has always kind of been my default travel outfit. I never wear jeans on a plane, train or bus, even for short hops. I just have to be comfortable — but I don’t want to sacrifice being cute!

Enter Encircled. Try the on and I warn you — you’ll never go back. They’re soft, they’re slimming, and most importantly, they have a perfect wide waistband that won’t pinch or pull you anywhere. They’re so flattering! How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

• I love the higher waistband, but you can also fold them over if you’re a low-rise kind of girl.

• These are also the rare leggings that can double as everyday wear or workout pants in a pinch, if you’re traveling super light (typically I prefer to keep them separate for laundry reasons).

• Long-legged ladies, these babies are perfect for you. If you’re a shortie like me, you might consider the , which on someone of my height are probably going to be full-length.

• I am not a size zero, and I love that I never have to worry about these leggings being see through.

On that last note, I prefer to pair leggings with a top that covers my bum — and that’s where the  comes in. Bonus note on this top — it’s perfect for countries where you need to be a bit conservative. High neck, not too form fitting if you size up, and still super flattering. Toss a scarf over those shoulders and bam! Bottom line? I love this top so much I’ve already signed up to be alerted when  is back in stock.

The best part of this travel outfit? I can really dress this top up upon landing. Toss those Tieks back in my bag and pull out a pair of wedges and a big statement necklace and I’m ready to rock. As I slowly attempt to recover from my overpacking addiction and travel a little lighter, outfits that can go from airport-casual to going-out-chic are essential!

Ideally, if I’m on a trip where I’m bringing boots or chunky wedges, I like to save space in my bag and wear those on the plane (wedges are a no-go if I have a tight connection and might end up running through the airport, though!)

2. …heading from baggage claim to a bar

Lately I’ve had a ton of flights where I’m getting off the plane and going directly to meet someone, make a dinner reservation, or some situation that involves dressing up. I used to kind of loathe this because I couldn’t find the balance of dressy and comfort, but these days I embrace it. Thanks in large part to , which allows me to pack a navy blue and a black skirt in one.

I rarely wear shorts these days — they just no longer feel very flattering to my current body. So suffice it to say, I pack a lot of skirts. And I love that this is two in one! You can even flip down the top of the skirt for a color block look. With tights, you could really bring it into all seasons.

3. …for the super long haul flights

For transcontinental flights, I basically want to wear my pajamas in public but also look fly enough that I wouldn’t cry if I ran into an ex in an airport (which has basically happened to me — what is my life). Not an easy task, but  is up to the task. Of all my Encircled finds, these are my new obsession and I’m already considering a pair in black as well. I literally can’t stop wearing them.

So my funny story with these is that I actually bought this pair of cheap black harem pants (or as I call them, MC Hammer pants) off the street in Thailand — the fast fashion addiction is hard to break! They were super comfortable and I loved the look from the hips down but basically looked like a bulky diaper around the waist. They were definitely a source of amusement around my friends — I could not wear them in public, though putting them on was the first thing I did whenever I walked in the door home. Because they were so cheaply made, they were falling apart within months.

So can you even imagine my excitement when I realized someone had designed a (seriously) upgraded version that I could actually wear in public and love forever? I literally can’t imagine traveling without these ever again.

The dressy sweatpant is my go-to for travel days when I need maximum comfort but don’t want to be caught looking like a slob. You’re treated better at airports when you don’t look like you spent the night in the terminal – and while random upgrades are rarer and rarer these days, you’re probably not going to get one wearing pajama pants.

Once you’ve arrived, these babies are perfect for pairing with flats or tennis shoes and a t-shirt — this is how I wear them the most, and always receive a ton of compliments on. They’re also perfect for dressing down for yin yoga, or dressing up for a swanky dinner. You can also push up the bottoms to make into a cropped look, which I haven’t tried yet — but would love to for making this into a dressier look with wedges.

One final bonus that makes these babies perfect for travel? A hidden invisible zipper pocket in the back waistband, perfect for hiding a room key, your credit cards, or a stash of emergency cash.

Why Encircled

I have truly struggled to adapt to the idea of investing in clothes. I’ve always been a frugal and simple girl and prided myself on sourcing my wardrobe from affordable retailers like H&M or Target. I was always proud of living in hand-me-downs from my friends and cousins! However, as the years go on and I become a more conscious consumer, I’ve started to slowly accept that when I buy something “cheap,” the cost of my $8.99 miniskirt is being passed on in some way to someone or something less fortunate than I — either our planet or the person who manufactured it. And when it goes out of style or pills and looks awful after a few months? Chances are, it’s ending up in a landfill.

As I’ve started thinking of my purchases overall as an investment in the future of the planet and the people on it, that made it easier to start shifting my mindset. I still won’t hand over my credit card if I think an item is marked up just because it’s got a certain logo on the label. But if I know it’s priced fairly because it was made using earth-friendly materials and created by people who were paid a fair wage for their labor? I feel excited to be a part of that. It’s a slow journey and I’m far from perfect, but I’m always working towards living ever more sustainably and shopping ever more consciously.

I want to focus on quality over quantity — and I’m trying to be accountable to all of you by writing about it here. It’s going to be a slow process (my biggest struggle will be curbing my tendency to go crazy on festival gear and costumes — I love dress up!) but I do want to work on breaking my addiction to fast fashion and focus on slowly upgrading to the classics, all while being mindful of where my old belongings end up when I downsize. These Encircled are pieces that I already know will be with me for years — I’ve been completely obsessed since they first landed in my suitcase!

Wear Good, Feel Good

Did you know the fashion industry is the world’s second largest , after oil? And that 25% of chemicals produced worldwide are used for textiles? Did you know the fashion industry is the second biggest polluter of freshwater resources on the planet?

Yikes! Encircled has managed to manufacture not only the softest clothing I have ever owned but also probably the most environmentally friendly. They use completely chemical-free dyes on biodegradable fabrics like Tencel, which is 50% more breathable than cotton — great for conservative countries where you need to cover up and keep cool, bamboo rayon, the most eco-friendly fabric on the planet, and modal, an absolute magical fabric derived from a renewable source that is the softest I’ve ever felt. (, if you’re into that kinda thing!) All these fabrics are created with no wastewater dumped into the environment in what is called a ‘closed loop process.’ Several of them are knit and dyed right in Toronto. And Encircled works overtime to reduce fabric waste, using the cuttings from production to create headbands, leg warmers, and hair ties.

Encircled is all about buying better, and traveling and living lighter. They design mindfully and produce ethically. When I nab a pair of these leggings, I’m not just adding a pair of the softest pants you’ve ever owned to your wardrobe. I’m supporting sustainably-made, sweatshop-free production and supporting a fellow female entrepreneur. No buyer’s remorse here.

Your Turn!

Thinking of checking out a few Encircled pieces for yourself? If you’re in Toronto, you can actually make an in-person shopping appointment at their studio! If not, their online sizing guides are detailed, and the online reviews for each product are gushing and numerous — tons of happy customers have left their heights and weights along with the sizes they settled on, which can be super helpful if you’re waffling on which to buy.

But regardless of where you are in the world, you now have the chance to win a $300 shopping spree!

Definitely — when I’m packing boots or trainers, I definitely try to wear them on the plane if only because I don’t want to lug them! It’s one thing that makes me grateful for having small feet, LOL!

Oh man, I haven’t bought new clothes in so long since all my money goes either to plane tickets or delicious food!
But I do have a pair of legging I love wearing on flights and a few comfy t-shirts that aren’t too tight. They’re definitely my go-to plane clothes.

I love my black stretchy pants with a wide smooth waist and even a small sipper pocket in the back. I wear them almost exclusively when I travel. I have them in capri length too. They are sporty, but easily pass as dressy black slacks. They wash and dry quickly and don’t wrinkle. Having comfy functional clothes like these in my travel wardrobe have totally upped my traveling game! Thanks for the review.

    • Meihoukai
      September 14 2017

You’re so welcome Emily! That wide smooth waist is what I’m always looking for — and it can be so tough to find! I don’t want anything that cuts me!

Thank you for the review! I, like you, have a tendency to purchase “fast fashion” despite being an environmental engineer and focusing my career around restoring some of the planets most precious ecosystems. Your review definitely made me think about where my clothes come from (and also how I could actually look comfy and cute on a plane!).

    • Meihoukai
      September 14 2017

I feel ya Christy! I really didn’t start making the connection between the two until fairly recently and now that I have it’s like… duh, what took me so long to get this! I think it’s going to be a tough habit to break but I’m definitely more aware than ever of what I’m buying.

I’m so glad you’re getting into sustainable fashion and sharing the message! Great post! I’ve been obsessing over Encircled ever since I saw an ad for their Chrysalis cardi, which looks like it can be turned into a dress, skirt, top AND scarf. I also like the idea of their kimono dress/jacket. Basically I’m just obsessed with multi-way clothing…ha!

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

I am super tempted by the kimono dress/jacket too. I am kind of intimidated by the Chrysalis cardi since I’m not that savvy with fashion or coordination, ha ha. But I love the look on other girls!

  • Laure B.
    August 14 2017

Love the outfits! Looks so comfy and stylish at the same time, best of both worlds really :-)!

I have built up my travel-outfit over the years, and this is what it comes down to: stretchy jeans that look like jeans but sit as comfy as leggings, a regular tank top over which I wear a (opened) button down shirt and a hoodie over that. Then I also bring my softest scarf, which doubles as a blanket during the flight or as an eye mask, depending on whether or not the AC is put on arctic temperatures. The cherry on top: my nicest sneakers!

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Love that you’ve got it down, girl! Scarf is a good call — I should get on that train. I do always bring a small “sleep kit” in my carry on for long flights, with a sleep mask, ear plugs, a chapstick and lotion, just everything I need to get cozy and nod off!

I recently moved to Ethiopia and have found myself travelling a lot, but I always get cold on flights so I usually make sure I have a light scarf and jumper on hand. The scarf works well for dressing up an outfit once I leave the airport too! Great post – I’m also trying to live more ethically and got a bit obsessed over your solid shampoo post recently – spent ages on the lush website after that! Please keep then coming =)

I have been so intrigued by Encircled! I typically wear black skinny jeans (jeggings, if I’m being honest) with a cute, loose tshirt. In the summer I wear dresses. Comfort is key, of course, but I also start to get cranky if I feel like a slob. I just cannot wear yoga pants on a plane, though I’m always jealous of the comfort of those who do!

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

I agree, if I feel slobby or really off my game I’m on edge — like I’m going to run into an ex or something LOL. I don’t think I could wear a dress on a plane unless it was a maxi — I get SO COLD on those things!

I discovered Encircled this year as well. Got those fancy sweatpants in black, now I think I need another pair in charcoal or navy. They are so comfortable and can’t wait to wear them on extended travels. I’ve been eyeing their V-neck and essential Ts as well.

I usually wear stretchy skinny jeans and a loose-fitting shirt to fly. I added Encircled to my list of bookmarks as I’m currently in the process of overhauling my and my husband’s wardrobes to be ethical. I’ve been doing a lot of second-hand from Thredup and am loving Threads 4 Thought, Pact, and United by Blue.

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Nice, Christine! Thank you so much for the recommendations — I’m totally at the beginning of this journey so all suggestions are super appreciated. Second hand seems like a great way to go. When I am getting rid of clothes I do try to sell them for super cheap (easy to do where I live in Thailand and expats are always looking for clothes) just to make sure they go to someone who will actually wear them and not into a landfill.

I definitely need comfy clothes for travel. When traveling for work, I hate wearing dress pants on the plane or on long car rides. I try to wear more pull on dress pant styles or leggings. All of Encircled clothing would be a great addition to my work and casual wardrobe! I have my eye on a couple of pieces

I travel almost every week for work and I’m always looking for cute but comfortable travel outfits. Thanks for sharing!

You’re so welcome Lisa! I think Encircled would hit the spot just right.

    August 14 2017

I’m obsessed with those outfits. Especially the sweat pants perfect for long flights!

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Those are exactly what I plan to wear on my flight back to Thailand this weekend 🙂

    August 14 2017

I love encircled such a great brand. Good job for partnering with them.

When I travel, even on long haul flights I like to wear jeans. They are heavy and take up a lot of room in the suit case. As long as they fit well I’m comfortable, even wore them to and from Australia this year. I also wear a loose tunic tank, sweater and blanket scarf. Layers and having a black on board are key!
    Thanks for the great tips!

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Girl I am impressed — I could barely wear jeans flying JFK to LAX let alone to Australia, ha ha. Maybe I need comfier jeans 😉 But you are right that it frees up suitcase weight!

  • Mary B
    August 14 2017

In spite of regular long haul travel for work, I’ve yet to figure out a travel outfit that I really love (this past trip I made the mistake of wearing jeans for 22+ hours of transit – whyyyyyyy? I know better!). I’ve been debating trying Encircled for awhile but have been put off by the price and the concerns about sizing as a short person. Thank you for reminding me why it’s worth investing in clothing that matches my values – and for the hot tip on the crop leggings. I guess I have no excuses now not to try them!

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Yay! Let me know what you think then you do — I’ll especially be curious about the crop leggings. If I order another pair that’s definitely the direction I’ll go.

    August 14 2017

Hey Meihoukai, I have recently stumbled upon the wonders of Encircled as well and couldn’t be more in love with a clothing brand! My first purchase was a teal chryslis cardi and I can’t get enough of it. I’ve never been a “dressy girl” but this thing is too dam comfy and flattering not to wear all the time. I’ve gotten so many compliments while wearing it! You look absolutely amazing in your photos! I was a bit hesitant on the skirt but you look great in it and I think I’ll have to give it a try too (and some of those sweatpants!).

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Oh, teal sounds beautiful! I haven’t seen that color — will have to check out their site and look for it. Thanks for the kudos — definitely try the skirt and sweatpants! I’m hooked!

  • Kel
    August 14 2017

I also struggle with a good airport outfit. I need to invest in leggings that won’t be completely stretched out after a long flight. Going to check out this company.

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Ugh I know I end up wearing holes in all my cheap leggings. So excited to finally have a great high quality pair!

  • laura
    August 14 2017

My go-to on travel days is a long cotton blend skirt with a wide elastic waist band… very similar to your hammer pants rationale! As a fellow shorty, I like to be able to sit crisscross or fold my legs up when they don’t quite reach the ground comfortably in a chair, and a long skirt keeps things PG. I usually pair it with a tshirt or tank topped with a light sweater and/or circle scarf, so I’ve definitely got my eye on the Chrysalis Cardi Maxi! Thanks for spotlighting another awesome ecofriendly company, Meihoukai.

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Nice! My frequent travel buddy Heather does a very similar travel day outfit to you (is that a weird thing to know about a person?) and she always looks super comfortable. So glad to hear you guys are loving these sustainability posts — I’ll keep ’em coming!

Love the Canadian pride in this brand 🙂 It is a nice and rare treat to be able to purchase things that you know were ethically produced right around the corner.

    August 15 2017

Love this company – I’ve also embraced the dressy sweatpant everywhere from office to plane and basically want everything they make at this point. Awesome choice.

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

I’m not sure if I’m supposed to pick favorites (haha) but it WOULD have to be the dressy sweatpant, just because it’s such an original piece that really doesn’t seem to be available elsewhere! I loooooove it.

  • Julie Nicol
    August 15 2017

I love Encircled! I got their Crysilis Cardi last year and its such a great travel piece. Plus its super soft 🙂

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

I can’t get over how soft their clothes are! Whenever I slip on the Wanderer Sleeveless tank I’m amazed!

I’m loving this post! I’m trying to be a lot more conscious about what type of clothing I get and move towards sustainable and ethical items. I absolutely love that these items are comfy AND stylish at the same time. Thanks for this share! Will have to check them out!

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

  • Karen
    August 15 2017

These look incredibly chic and comfortable. I’m usually in my leggings at the airport but these would definitely help elevate my style without sacrificing comfort while traveling!

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Absolutely! I’m no longer wearing anything on the plane that I have to immediately change out of upon landing, LOL.

  • Anna
    August 15 2017

This brand strikes the perfect balance between stylish and comfy. Love that you modeled multiple outfits for the different pieces — as a frequent traveler, mixing and matching is essential!

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Absolutely! When I’m packing, I always try to ask myself… can I wear this more than one way? If I can only wear a top with ONE bottom that I’m bringing, for example, I try not to pack it.

  • Tanya
    August 15 2017

I love everything about Encircled and they have changed the way I think about clothing in so many ways!

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

That’s awesome to hear Tanya — I’m kind of feeling the same way. I look at everything I buy with a much more critical eye now.

    August 15 2017

I don’t travel super often so it’s nice to have some pieces that I can travel in and wear in my everyday life! (Also A+ for sustainability!!)

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Yeah, I definitely don’t like buying “travel” clothes like zip off pants, ha — my one exception is a Scottevest, which is so perfect for long treks and adventure trips I can’t imagine life without it.

  • Charise
    August 15 2017

I’m always down for upgrading my comfy plane/car outfits!

  • Danielle
    August 15 2017

I usually layer my heaviest items when traveling by air! Lol! I am a serious overpacker! I’ll be heading to the UK in September and hoping to break my addiction with Encircled. I placed my first order today and can’t wait to experience what this unique company has to offer.

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Oh that’s awesome Danielle! What did you buy? And good luck with the overpacking addiction — I’m still a hot mess in that department!

  • Jade
    August 15 2017

Great post! I have a Chrysalis cardi so far and can’t wait to add more encircled clothing to my travel wardrobe!!

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Ah, everyone raves about that piece! I’m seriously tempted to give it a try!

  • Pam R
    August 15 2017

I have been eyeing up the encircled maxi cardi for a while, considering investing In it before our trip to Austria next spring. I love to wear clothes that feel comfortable but don’t look slobby when I travel. These clothes are perfect for that.

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Austria sounds like a good excuse to treat yourself to something new 😉 And with their focus on sustainability I feel like this is a splurge you can feel good about!

  • Terri
    August 15 2017

I just bought the dressy sweatpants for an upcoming trip. Excited to hear how well they worked for you!

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Ahhhh I’m so excited for you! Report back what you think of them — they are still my every day go-to.

  • Kim
    August 15 2017

I have the pencil skirt and chrysalis cardi, both of which I would highly recommend! Not only is encircled sustainable, they also have stellar customer service!

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

That is awesome to hear Kim — I wasn’t able to experience that from the customer side so it’s really nice to know. That is SUCH an important factor in whether I become a loyal lifetime fan of a company or not!

  • Stephanie M
    August 15 2017

I am the same as you! I always wear leggings. It would be nice to have some of these clothes for the quick switch from flight to going out. Thanks for the opportunity! Great post.

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Thanks for reading Stephanie! I’ll try to keep the packing and fashion posts coming, even if they are out of my comfort zone 🙂

  • Emma Price
    August 15 2017

I loved your review on encircled clothing. I am planning my big around the world backpacking trip nwxt year and I have a question about how you heavy the material is and if it is quick drying? I’ve been eyeing off the cristal cardi for a while now so when i discovered your review i was very excited as you are a traveler.
    Thanks xo

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Hey Emma! Hm, I would say the material feels very light when dry but heavy when wet, if that makes any sense. I don’t have any hesitation about packing any of it due to weight. I wouldn’t say it’s specifically very quick drying though — the leggings more than the other two pieces though, overall. I hope that helps, and I’m sure Encircled customer service would have more specific answers on drying times! Good luck and CONGRATS on your big backpacking trip! How exciting!

  • Dominika
    August 15 2017

I love Encircled myself, I own so many of their pieces and live in them!

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Nice! Awesome to hear from another Encircled enthusiast. What should I get next?!

  • Terri
    August 15 2017

I am obsessed with Encircled and love everything I’ve purchased (Chrysalis Cardi, dressy sweats, minimalist legggings, crop & regular, & Evolve tops). I’ve learned so much about ethical clothing from them.

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

I will definitely always be grateful to Encircled for kick-starting my education in sustainable fashion — I’m reading some books on it now that I started thanks to this post! I’ll perhaps have to do a follow up when I’m finished!

  • Kay
    August 15 2017

Great to see a Sustainable Canadian company!

    • Meihoukai

    August 16 2017

I love that encircled is a Canadian company and I love that they are ecoconscious in their manufacturing – it’s a win win. Definitely could use a pair of those dressy sweatpants 😁

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Once you put them on… you will not want to take them off. Already considering buying a pair in black, too. There is just nothing like them!

  • Joy
    August 16 2017

I love this post! I am also in love with all things Encircled! Their clothing is amazing quality and the styles are timeless!

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

So true — I love that these shapes won’t go out of fashion in a season or two. I plan to have these babies with me for a looong time.

  • Anna
    August 16 2017

I always try to wear my biggest or chunkiest shoes I’m bringing, leggings, tunic tee, jacket with pockets, and scarf. I get so cold on planes and hot rushing to the gate I have to have my layers !

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

That is very true — gotta dress like an onion for airports. I am always so dang cold on planes but tend to be traveling to hot destinations so the minute I step outside, I’m sweltering if I didn’t wear layers!

  • Beth
    August 16 2017

I’ve been wanting to try encircled for some time now. Their clothes are beautiful and look so comfy.

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Make the leap 🙂 But, warning… once you do, you’re likely to be hooked!

  • Amber
    August 16 2017

I have been eyeing Encircled clothing for a while, but like you, have had a hard time justifying cost (also, that the return/exchange process is kind of daunting for an American, and they’re sold out of everything! haha). I love how you wear their clothing and look so beautiful, and appreciate seeing them on you because I think we’re probably about the same size and I wasn’t sure how they’d look on me (too tight, showing every bump, etc.)!! Thanks for the post, and the chance to win!!

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Ha, yeah, being sold out is a mixed blessing — it means they are popular and must be doing something right but that’s small compensation when you… really need a size small, ha ha. Thank you so much for the kind words!

  • Laura
    August 16 2017

Hate to be that person but “completely chemical-free dyes” is not a thing. All dyes are chemicals, the Encircled website calls them low impact dyes instead which is a better description.

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Hey Laura! Appreciate the correction! I read all those pages twice but I have to admit it’s all pretty over my head. I thought I understood it but looks like I still have some to learn 🙂

  • Allie
    August 16 2017

    Those pants look sooooo comfortable.

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

They are the best — none of my other clothes feel comfortable any more in comparison, haha.

  • AnelM
    August 16 2017

I have been following Encircled for a few months now dreaming of buying some of their pieces, I am trying to get over the sticker price shock. But I will get there eventually.

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

I know how you feel! If you are used to buying bargain clothes it can be hard to mentally transition to paying “the true cost.” I totally get that! I think you’re right, it’s a process. I’m watching some documentaries and reading some books that are definitely helping me with the transition — I’ll try to write a review of these soon!

  • Ashley
    August 16 2017

I love my dressy sweatpants and want everything encircle makes!!

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

YES can we do a dressy sweatpant meetup!? Only requirement, everyone must wear a pair. Lol.

    August 16 2017

I have the dressy sweatpants, and enjoy wearing them to the office and to yoga without changing. You know that dream everyone has when you realize you left home without your pants on? I feel like that wearing them, they are so incredibly comfortable and lightweight on.

“The most eco-friendly fabric on the planet” is a bit of a stretch for bamboo rayon (although unlike some, Encircled uses best practices for a closed loop process). That honour goes to hemp.

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Ha ha! I LOVE that feeling. I’m not too familiar with hemp but thank you for pointing me in that direction for the future!

  • Gillian
    August 16 2017

This company sounds so cool.. i would love to try out their clothing!!

I am a classic over packer!! I order the Encircled Chrysalis Cardi to make my travel in the fall easier and I absolutely love it. I’ve already worn as a dress, a scarf and a wrap. You article is convincing me to get the leggings now too:)

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Ah, and all these comments are convincing me that I need to try the Chrysalis Cardi! Let me know what you think of the leggings, and I’ll report back on the cardi!

They really are. Thanks for reading, Genna!

  • That skirt looks amazing! I always feel amazing when I look put together on a plane. Plus lately I seem to have something to do immediately when I land, so not having to change before heading out into the real world is a bonus

    • Meihoukai
      September 15 2017

Same! I guess I am overbooking myself these days, ha. But I always seem to be heading directly to an event or activity!

Let me know what you think when you do, Ally! Love hearing reader feedback on brands I partner with!

  • Jenny B.
    August 16 2017

Okay…I think you’ve convinced me to buy a pair of their leggings! Their scarf-multi-way-dress thing caught my eye too! Have you tried that? Also, I really like the grey boat neck sleeveless tee you are wearing in the photos. Is that an encircled find too?

    • Meihoukai
      September 17 2017

I have not tried the famous Encircled Chrysalis Cardi but my friend Rachel from Hippie in Heels has — check her blog for her review! That boatneck tee is not encircled, sadly — I think it may have been from Target or H&M? I’ve had it for a while but it definitely fits into the fast fashion category :-/

  • Cristal
    August 16 2017

These look great and I’m so surprised that they sounds comfy. Usually you have to sacrifice one for the other.

    • Meihoukai
      September 17 2017

Not with Encircled 🙂 Dressed head to toe in them right now on a layover after a 14 hour flight and I feel great!

  • Amber
    August 16 2017

Thanks for the giveaway! I’ve been looking into Encircled for a while now and love the clothes and how ethical the company is. Heading to Europe for my first international trip next month and some of these pieces would be perfect!

Great post! Reminds me of a recent overseas trip where I took 1 pair dress sweatpants & 1 sleeveless revolve dress and was quite impressed with their versatility. That trip led me to purchase some short sleeve t-shirts from Encircled. Now I’m thinking about adding a love sleeve shirt…..it seems that once you start….

Hi! I love your blog post! I traveled extensively for the last two months and one of my favorite things that I packed was my Chrysalis Cardi from Encircled. They are such a great company! Encircled has so many items I want to try. How do they hold up in the wash? Living in an apartment, I don’t have my own so I need items that hold up well.

    • Meihoukai
      September 17 2017

I feel ya — I spend half the year in Thailand where I have no choice but to send my laundry out. So far they have definitely held up great, and I alternate between air drying and popping in the dryer depending on my mood. I have noticed the dressy sweatpants seem to loosen up as I wear them, so I like to dry those to get them back to their original tightness and shape.

Firstly, Encircled’s digital marketing is on point bc they are finding me EVERYWHERE! Secondly, I obviously approve of everything about this post and it’s super timely as I’m currently directing a documentary on sustainable fashion in which we follow an acclaimed London designer as she traces every step of her supply chain.

Luckily for the planet but unlucky for my wallet, I’ve always had expensive taste so never really went in for fast fashion. Even as a kid, I remember feeling sad about an item of clothing my parents would buy that I didn’t feel was well made. Now I know why! If people realised the amount of resources (ie 2700 gallons of water for a pair of jeans), chemicals and painstaking, criminally underpaid labor that goes into a single garment, they probably wouldn’t be bragging about their $10 t-shirt. The actual cost is astronomical.

Thing is, the fashion industry has been waaaay slower to evolve than some others because the issues are so deeply systemic – traceability and accountability are almost impossible. So when an Encircled comes along, it makes my heart soar. Sure, there is always room for improvement. As the folks at Reformation say, the #1 sustainable option is to go naked. But we’ve got to start somewhere & we’ve got to do it fashionably or sustainable clothing will never take off. Personally, I have my eye on those dressy sweatpants! And for those who have trouble with the price, just buy less! I buy a handful of quality items per year that I really love and the result is that I’m rocking things I bought 20 years ago, not to mention 2nd and 3rd generation items from my mother and grandmother who passed on this philosophy in the first place.

For further info, I recommend the doc “The True Cost” on Netflix. Also, some of my favourite sustainable brands include Reformation and Swedish Hasbeens (hello, grain leather clogs!).

    • Meihoukai
      September 20 2017

When will this documentary be ready because I NEED to watch it! Also I am in the process of watching and reading everything I can on this topic and am thinking of writing a post about it in the future — so I’d love to add yours to that when it’s available! (Watched The True Cost… wow!)

Loooove that you are wearing hand-me-downs from your ma and grandma. I get so many hand-me-downs from my cousin and I love it… when I am ready to let go of clothes I try to give them so someone I know will love them rather than dump them in a donation bin where I’m afraid they will actually end up in a landfill. Donating clothes comes with such good intentions but the research I’ve been doing lately has really given me pause.

      • becky hutner
        September 21 2017

I love everything about this response Meihoukai. You have obviously been doing your homework!! I hope the doc will be ready by next summer but as I’m sure you’re aware, documentary filmmaking is not a quick process! I will definitely keep you in the loop.

As for donations, I have been so paralysed by the numerous options for where to send your clothes – and their pitfalls – that I’ve had 2 full suitcases in my living room for a YEAR. Life has become so complicated!!

  • Meihoukaiis
    August 26 2017

I’m a leggings girl – never, ever jeans. With respect to the sustainability aspects of things, I typically get brands like Lululemon on eBay or Poshmark secondhand – they’re not new, so there’s zero waste, and they’re often much cheaper than what you can get in a store, even at a discounted price.

    • Meihoukai
      September 20 2017

That’s such a great point — secondhand is a super great way to be sustainable. I love shopping secondhand, and receiving hand-me-downs… I’m lucky lots of my friends send them my way 🙂
