Holidays are one of my favorite things in the world. The traditions, the parties, the opportunity for color coordinated dress; what could be better? I’ve struggled this week with the fact that I’m missing out on Thanksgiving, one of the most important and beloved holidays in my house. When I’m moping about today picturing my family and friends eating delicious food, doing a giant puzzle (family tradition! we aren’t football people) and wearing fantastic fall themed outfits, I’m going to remind myself that I can partake in the most important part of the day from anywhere on Earth, and that’s remembering what I’m thankful for. Here’s what I’m grateful for this Thanksgiving, halfway around the world:

Thanksgiving 2010
• The ability to learn constantly – In Cambodia and Vietnam I feel like I’m taking a crash course in the history my formal education didn’t teach me, or that I didn’t absorb. History has never felt so alive.

• Unexpected messages from family and friends at home – In the past month I’ve heard from friends who I haven’t spoke to since leaving New York. Just knowing they were thinking of me made my day.

• The ability to do something new or adventurous on a near daily basis – this week alone I went scuba diving, soaked in a mud bath, and signed up to go canyoning (Google it).

• The technology that has allowed me to share this journey with you all and preserve it better than my memory ever could. I’ve said it before, waking up to your comments is one of the best parts of the day!

The Thanksgiving at the Tappletons show will go down in history as one of my greatest creative accomplishments! If only I was blogging way back then…

Hmm I noticed your FAMILY wasn’t on the list of things to be thankful for… nevertheless, I’m thankful for my cooler, more worldly older sister. Happy Thanksgiving Xoxoxoxo

Hmmm… did you just admit in a public forum that I am cooler than you?! This is going down in the books!

    Nice stuff, this.
Looking forward next week to a blog post as you remember Christmas Parties past. December 3, this year, a week early. Alas — gulp! — no theme.
    Happy Thanksgiving.

I’m grateful for a daughter who is brave, funny, adventuring, intelligent and loving. And for the Marine who is on 24/7 duty for her safety!

And of course I’m deeply grateful for Olivia, my daughter who loves her parents enough to come home for Thanksgiving…

And for all the family and friends who make my life such a wonderful ride.
