Back in January, I posted a mini European Bucket List when I realized that I did have some must-visit destinations in the continent that usually sits at the bottom of my wanderlust list. I loved the discussion that ensued in the comments and all the ideas you guys gave me — clearly, I’m in the minority in not paying much attention to the countries across the pond! In the past six months, I’ve realized there are a couple more destinations I want to add to my list. Last time I named three cities that have captured my imagination, but this time I’m going more big picture. Here are three countries that I’m itching to get to (or in one case, get back to):

Greek Flag through Flowers

1. Greece

Okay, so technically I’ve already been to Greece. It was a dream trip — a weekend in Athens followed by a luxury cruise through the islands and towards Istanbul. But it far from scratched the itch that has been my lifetime obsession with Greece — in fact, I’d say it only made it worse! I’m looking forward to time spent marveling at the beauty of Santorini, indulging in a good epic party binge on Mykanos, and discovering all the other little islands whose name I’ve never heard. A summer spent island hopping and working in this country sits high on the bucket list for my twenties.

2. Russia

Ever since I read  by Paul Theroux, I’ve romanticized the idea of a great rail journey like the Trans Siberian Railway. But as you all may have noticed, I tend to gravitate towards more warm weather destinations — so I kind of forgot about this idea for a while. But recently, my blog buddy Emily started posting about , the first coverage of the country on any travel blog that I read, and it ignited an unexpected wanderlust in me. I look forward to someday stepping outside my comfort zone and completing this epic rail journey through a country so unlike any that I have ever been to before.

3. Austria

Two cold weather destinations in one bucket list roundup — has this beach-loving blogger lost her mind? That’s always a possibility, though it’s most likely that I’ve just been spending a tad too much time around certain winter sports enthusiast travelers. I’ve always found the idea of skiing and snowboarding to be wildly unappealing thanks to, you know, coldness. But then I heard about this whole situation, and I was all, “No one told me that there was booze and fashionable snowpants and festive music involved!” Austrian après ski? Count me in.

What about you readers, what else is on your European bucket list?!

Europe has my travel heart!!! And I loved Greece — one of my favorite trips and I am dying to go again someday and Austria… Austria was the first country I traveled to overseas and I think it’s very underrated! I’m glad to see it’s on your European Bucket List. 🙂 So excited for you!

Erika I love to hear the positive vote for Austria 🙂 I love Greece as well… I need to get back there sooner rather than later!

If you are thinking of doing Greece, consider the island of Ios as well. It is akin to Mykonos in terms of the party scene, but a lot closer to Santorini.

I’ve definitely heard that about Ios… I’ll have to add it to the list! Thanks for the tip Rachael 🙂

Europe was where all my travels started six years ago now, and I am absolutely dying to go back just like you are. I loved Greece and Austria, and Russia sits high up there (my top five!) for me as well. I’ve always wanted to go back and head to Croatia, too, as I didn’t go when I was there and regret it as its become more and more popular in the past few years. Eastern Europe would be awesome to conquer, and seeing the Northern Lights is number one on my European bucket list. Always too much to see and do.

Croatia has become such a buzzed about destination lately, I agree! Oh, and the Northern lights…. I might have to make a Part III to this list!

I think your mini European Bucket list was the first post of yours that I ever read or at least commented on 🙂 One new country on my European Bucket list is Croatia – apparently not as expensive as Italy or France, but just as beautiful if the pictures that I’ve been seeing are accurate at all 😉

I think Russia could be super interesting to visit, just because it’s far away from the usual tourist routes. And what an adventure taking the Trans Siberian railway must be!

    xx

I have to say these three places would have to go on my list too. I’ve never been to any of them and lately I’ve seen GORGEOUS Greece pics on blogs, so for me, that’s #2 right now (after Iceland that is, your adventures there sold me!).

I am so glad to hear that I’ve talked someone into Iceland 🙂 It’s SUCH a magical place… and so different from Greece! Amazing how two such places can be on the same continent.

  • Sorry I’ve been MIA, life has just been so busy that I haven’t been able to read any of my favorite blogs boo! My #1 dream destination in Europe is probably Greece or Russia. I would LOVE to see more of Italy and Spain, as they are simply amazing.

Austria is also home to the Alps – which are just as breathtaking in summer as during winter. So, if you’re not a fan of cold weather, I’d highly recommend checkin the Alps out when it’s warm – most of the ski resorts/hotels are still open for business!

I think my skiing friends would kill me if I went to the Alps in the summer… I already did that with Keystone, Colorado last year! I might just have to pack lots of warm clothes 🙂

I was just in Athens for the second time, and I still nerd out over the ruins (classical civilization minor checking in here). I would LOVE to go to Turkey for more of the same as well as the crazy scenery in parts of the country. I want to go back to Portugal…visit Berlin…see Slovenia…the list goes on. And thanks for the link love – I was so surprised by Russia, and I’m glad I have someone else interested in it now too.

I think Athens is SUCH an amazing city! I wasn’t expecting to love it but I really did. Turkey I want to return to as well, just for Cappadocia alone! I’m so kicking myself for not adding a few days to my trip to stop there. Ugh.

I almost did the trans siberian trip back to Europe but I decided to hold off for another time, it is on the bucket list, along with Russia. I’d really like to visit Germany and Poland at the moment, but then I want to see the world so it’s always hard to narrow it down 🙂

I’m generally more drawn to Latin America and Southeast Asia than Europe but I think all of these trips sound awesome. I guess in my head, Europe = luxury travel while LA and SEA are more budget destinations. But I’d still love to visit so many places there – Italy, Spain, Ireland, London, Paris…I can’t deny that I would jump at a chance to visit any of those.

Sky, I totally agree. I guess that’s why Europe has always been at the bottom of my mental wish list…. but I guess that’s why I like this series, trying to find new places in the world I want to go. If I wrote a post about my South America Bucket List, for example, it would be really short. In fact, I can write it right here: ALL OF IT. 🙂

Greece is at the top of my list, too! And I never had the chance to go over to Bosnia when I was in Croatia. So… I’ll just have to plan another trip 🙂 Sweden is also a top choice because of the beautiful landscapes, beautiful people, and AWESOME language 😉

Hi Meihoukai- I just recently found your blog, while searching for Eurpoe bucket list items. I’ll definitely be adding these to my list. My husband and I were just recently relocated to London, and I have been doing as much research on travel blogs as I can. I just started up my travel blog to document our journey! 🙂

What about Corsica? Google: Palombaggia, Rondinara, Roccapina, Calanches de piana,Scandola, Porto Ota, Evisa, Lac de Nino, Corte, Restonica, Bonifacio, Sainte Lucie De Tallano, Bavella, Filitosa, Calvi, Saleccia. Many different landscapes on a relatively small but extremely beautiful island. And next month I will test the Greek Islands Corfu, Paxos and Antipaxos for you 😉 Have a lot of travel fun!

I know, that 95% of people crawes for warm places, but for me chilly weather and cozy clothing is the best thing, so Eastern Europe and Canada are perfect places for that. Thats a good thing, because my travel destinations tend to be less crowded!:)
By the way, I have done the trans-Syberian railway and it was just what I expected and as romantic as you described. If you finally decide to look in to travelling to Russia I suggest to try Travel All Russia agency, at least for me getting visa and dealing with the paperwork was efortless.

That sounds awesome, Martin. I have to admit, cold isn’t usually my jam, though I did enjoy Iceland — in the summer 😉
